B.Y.O.B.: Malformed Hamburger Buns and Lessons Learned

First off, Thank you to Jay of Tasty Appetite for becoming a follower of my site!

The saga of making hamburger buns. It’s the thought that counts when gift giving, right? Am I right? Same should apply to your efforts in the kitchen. I tried. They tasted fine…...but they look like potatoes instead of sandwich or burger buns!

Someone I had interacted with in the past had acquired a wicked cool hamburger bun pan. It made the buns look like the type you buy at the market…except of course they were homemade (so much better for you). One day last week we let the crockpot do the work and made shredded BBQ pork. And then we thought, why not make our own buns? Alas…….I didn’t have the wicked cool bun pan.

So the proverbial light bulb went off when Doug and I were shopping at Publix (Florida chain grocery store) and we roamed into the bakery. THEY don’t have individual baking tins for making their buns look like buns. Right? I talked to a kind lady in the bakery and explained I wanted to make buns and could she give me advice?

She explained how to flatten the dough out into disks, making them the size I wanted the bun. Then put a plate or something atop the flattened dough so they didn’t rise to horribly large proportions. I listened….but I never did get the dough flattened to the size I wanted the bun. And yeah…here you have it.

I am totally getting that bun pan one day.in the meantime, I will try again to spread that dough out as needed. What the hell…they look like little sliders. That’s popular now, right?

Misshapen or not, they were very good. Especially with a liberal doing of shredded BBQ.

Ingredients.....

2 tsp. (or ½ packet) of yeast
3 cups bread flour
2 TB sugar
2 tsp. salt
3 TB nonfat dry milk powder
2 TB butter
1 cup water

Directions
I used the bread machine on the dough setting and once it was done, divided the dough out into twelve equal parts. Shape the dough round and flat (remember flat!!) and then cover and let rise 1 hour. Bake at 375 F for 20 minutes.

So there you have it. Not identifiable as a hamburger bun but tasty all the same.
