Topics changed and then came back again to the original subjects. Somewhat. Between several of us shouting Monty Python lines from Holy Grail (or lines from Fawlty Towers), the subject of our beloved potatoes and chocolate came up.
Stuff that happens when you get 11 people together who are fun and raucous. Well, most of the time.
So I asked my brother-in-law...if the choice is between chocolate and potatoes....if you had to give one of those up FOREVER........which would you choose? The potatoes or the chocolate?
He asks, "Can I have the potatoes prepared any variety of ways? My choice?"
"Absolutely."
So he chose potatoes. I think I am on board with that as well. The snap below is not, in fact, potatoes littering my cooling rack. They are potato rolls.
This recipe may be used for a loaf of bread or divided up to make rolls. We had recently made a loaf of white bread using potato flakes but prefer the recipe without the flakes. It was a good loaf…very moist. But the consistency wasn’t sturdy enough for my PBJ.
As rolls – well, this gets a gold star. My sister-in-law gave me the recipe last month and I am just getting around to trying it.
Ohmygod...these are so delicious. I smeared a bit of butter inside one roll. Bliss. It's hard to stay away from a bunch of hot potato rolls fresh from the oven. (In spite of my indulgence I still lost a half pound this past week, thank you very much :-)
Ingredients you'll need:
3 1/4 cups bread flour
1/2 cup instant mashed potato flakes
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons butter
1 1/4 cups water
2 teaspoons instant yeast
Directions using bread machine on Dough cycle:
Place ingredients in the pan of the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer.
Once dough cycle is completed, pull dough out, punch down and let sit for 30 minutes to rise.
Separate into 14 or 16 individuals balls of dough and shape as a roll. Let rise again for about 15 minutes. Bake at 375 F for 25 minutes on a backing sheet.

If you're a Python fan.....these lines will be familiar :-)
King of Swamp Castle: Please! This is supposed to be a happy occasion. Let's not bicker and argue over who killed who.
Sir Bedevere: What makes you think she's a witch?
Peasant 3: Well, she turned me into a newt!
Sir Bedevere: A newt?
Peasant 3: [meekly after a long pause] ... I got better.
Crowd: [shouts] Burn her anyway!
But please......don't burn those potato rolls!

I bought some potato sausage to make for lunch tomorrow. Wish I had some of these rolls to make sandwiches with the sausage.
A Neeewwwwt!
Mmmm, these look good. I've always wanted to try a recipe with potato flakes in them...perhaps this will be the one I start with. Thanks so much for being such a BYOB'er :D
These rolls look great - I've never tried making a potato bread - perhaps it's time to have a go.
xo
Although these potato rolls look delicious, there is absolutely no way in hell I could ever give up chocolate. Things would get ugly:)
You are turning into quite the baker!
Janel, I wish I could share a sandwich with you :-)
Heather, I hope to have many submissions this year. "A Newt? Well...I got better"
Sue, Thank you, they were super easy.
Kim, I hear you...giving up chocolate would never be on the agenda. But i love potatoes too. Fortunately we don't have to make that choice.
I had company on the weekend so I missed this post! You are turning into a real pro; I remember when you bought your bread machine; Congratulations; printing it right now; I have potato flake in the cupboard.
Rita
I would also have chosen potatoes over chocolate; just so you know.
