Marrow Bone Soup - a Hunger Games meal

Finishing up with my postings on The Hunger Games, I offer you a rich meaty soup.

Katniss and Gale hunted deer, squirrels, rabbits and all sorts of game together. When you live hand to mouth as the people of Panem do, you use up every bit of the game. Marrow bones make for some rich delicious soup. (From Chapter 8)

Get out your stockpot and place 3 or 4 good meaty marrow bones I the bottom.

Add chopped meat, slices of carrot, chopped celery, onions, garlic, tomatoes, basil, a few gobs of butter and salt and pepper. Toss in anything else in your vegetable bins such as green beans or shredded cabbage.

Cover with water, bring to a boil for a good 3 or 4 minutes. Turn the heat to simmer and let it cook slowly for a couple of hours.

It will be even better the next day when it sits and the flavors mingle.

So glad I read this and participated in a group event involving the foods in The Hunger Games.

Initially The Hunger Games was a book I had zero interest in. Just by reading the back cover, it detailing how children would compete and kill one another for a national sporting game was a real turn off. In spite of the good reviews and it being the talk of the book forums I frequent, it was not a book I sought out or had on my to read list. But I discovered this book appeals to all ages and, as fortune would have it, my Kindle bargain of the day offered it up for $2.99 so….I bought it. It was a great read and afterwards I couldn’t wait to see the movie. Another bonus was the food – so many food references in both the book and the movie.

Thanks to Heather for hosting this event at Cook the Books and Food and Flix.

  7. I haven't used marrow bones for stock as I thought it would be a rather thin broth, but looking at your photo, i see that its very colourful and I am going to equate that with tasty. Thanks for posting and correcting my mis-conception.

  16. Oh, oh, oh - that looks delicious. I love bone marrow. As a special treat a couple of years ago we ate at St John's in Smithfield market https://www.stjohngroup.uk.com/smithfield/menu/sample_bar_menu/ I had the roast bone marrow and parsley salad - outstanding!
