Sunday Salon
{Books, Loki, Picadillo and Camping}

Happy Sunday! It's 66 degrees and partly cloudy in North Florida as I write. No big plans today except to bake some bread and walk a bit.  It's Sunday Salon catch-up time :-)

Books / Presently I am reading A Bit about Britain's History by Mike Biles. It's a great book and I can recommend it for anyone interested in the historical development of Britain. Trust me, it's not dry historical reporting, very engaging reading.

Behold my reading buddy here.  We sat outside yesterday as it was sunny.

My library loot was much more than I intended to pick up and I have now reached a conclusion that I need to read what is in the house.  Ha, we will see if I hold fast to that resolution. All my holds came in at once...why does that happen?

The Dogs with Jobs book and Code Girls are next as I can renew the Paul McCartney bio.  Also trying a new author Tarryn Fisher for the fiction The Wrong Family.

The Loki Chronicles / This little boy is a real can or worms. Long story short, we are keeping him.  If you hadn't read about our early experiences with him you won't know why that was a question at all - the keeping him part.

Today marks 17 days we've had him. The improvement is remarkable. He's now an affectionate fellow who plays and has has zero accidents inside.  While he was a snarling devil dog to all our friends & their dogs he is now socializing. We have had him at the park and he's getting along well now.  So far, so good!

For the record, he was advertised as crate trained.  That's big fat no on that one.  We kenneled him in a very roomy crate with towels when we went shopping.  We were gone one hour and he destroyed the bottom of the kennel.  That big hard plastic liner that's in the bottom...he shredded it.  Good thing he didn't cut himself.  If we leave him alone we've found he doesn't tear anything up so that's what we will do from now on.

Food / Not too much new going on here but I did make Chicken Chasseur as I had a few chicken thighs in the fridge.  The recipe is in the link from a post I did ages ago.

In the next week or so I would like to make picadillo again and use some leftovers for Patatas Rellenas.  My sister-in-law gave me the best recipe for picadillo and when we were able to visit them two years ago (that's too long ago!) we went to a restaurant serving the Patatas Rellenas.  It was a fabulous potato meal, stuffed with picadillo.  I'll use the recipe from this book, Clarita's Kitchen.

Next week we are camping at Stephen Foster Cultural Park, hope the weather is good.

That's it for this week. I hope all is well in your world and you and yours are safe and healthy.  Be careful out there!

  1. I'm so glad you gave Loki the time he needed to acclimate himself to you and your home! I hope you have many years of making each other happy!

I'm a book cover snob and the Garcia book caught my attention right away. I'll see if my library has it.

I hope you have a great week! Give Loki a hug from me!

    1. Vicki, thank so much for your nice sentiments. If they had been more forthcoming about his behavior and background prior to adoption we probably wouldn't have him but, he's growing on me. He needed a little love and he is showing it in return.

The Garcia book was a gift from my SIL and it's great.

  2. Tina, that is a load of books. I keep getting suckered in to buying the $1.99 ebooks plus I have a huge stack (or rather stacks) of TBR piles around the house. I feel your pain. Glad things are working out with the "devil dog"! :) He's a cutie, for sure.

    1. Debra, I have also bought many of the $1.99 deals. I think I will just start makng a list of books I want and holding off on requesting any more from the library for now. Too many at home I want to read.

Thanks, Loki is settling in now!

  4. It hasn't taken long for your dog to transform. I'm very glad for you.

I wonder how your bread came out. Nothing better than homemade bread.

The British history book looks good.

Hope you will share photos of your picadillo.

  5. I'm so happy to hear things are going better with Loki! It's hard to imagine what our dogs lives must have been like before adopting them, but he sure looks to be enjoying his time in the sun now! I've never made picadillo... reminds me of a bolognese with less sauce?

    1. JoAnn, it's a good Cuban dish with olives and a bit of sauce. Love the flavors. Yes, Loki loves his sun time and he's making progress everyday. We wanted him to like our friend's dog, and he doesn't seem too, but maybe that's just a personality clash. Either way, he is loving to us!

  6. Loki looks like a really happy camper at your place, he seems so comfy ! And maybe he just didn't liked to be locked up, brought up bad memories ? Anyway, I'm glad you love him and he loves you. Enjoy your British history and the sun :)

    1. IzaBzh, you are probably correct about getting locked up bringing back bad memories. He's been good when left alone for short periods so we will do that.

  7. Glad Loki is doing better! You are amazing puppy parents.

Camping sounds lovely. I'm hoping to do that when it gets a bit warmer! I hope you have/had a great time.

Looks like you got some great books from the library. I've had Code Girls on my list for awhile now. And that book about British history looks interesting. I hope you have a lovely week!
