Sunday Salon
{books, wine and cooking}

Hello and happy weekend to all!  Here's the roundup for the week.

Books /  Just finished reading The Last Girl to Die by Helen Fields and Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus.  The Garmus book is very engaging and I’d love to see it as a movie. Someone told me they may do a series from this book but it will be streaming. I can’t stream so… 😒 The Helen Fields book is an ARC from Netgalley and will be published September 1, 2022. As always, Fields delivers a thriller with surprise ending.

Currently reading The Lost Family: How DNA Testing is Upending Who We Are by Libby Copeland.

Sipping / We tried this Valpolicella. A heavy 15% wine.  Doug liked it more than I did but it was a good wine. In this heat we ought to be sipping whites and I do have a nice Pouilly Fuisse in the fridge.  Maybe tonight........

In the Kitchen / Earlier this week I did a post for  Weekend Cooking series.  If you'd like to see recipes for zucchini fries and Spaghattini with bacon and mushroom click HERE

Currently making some healthier lunch choices with this vegetable soup. We will be preparing extra dinner portions for upcoming lunches.  That's worked out well with grilled chicken and casseroles.  Better than PBJ everyday!

Thanks to those who indulged me in the "where-would-you-live-if-you-could-move" question last post.  :-)

Sharing with Deb at Readerbuzz for Sunday Salon, Marg at The Intrepid Reader for Weekend Cooking and Deb at Kahakai Kitchen for Souper Sunday.

  1. Between this and your last post, I realize that we're in a definite wine rut. We used to try new wine all the time, but lately we just go for the familiar each week.

    1. BFR - we tend to have our go-to wines here as well. If we try a new label we always have a backup in case we don't like a new wine. That has happened!

  2. We usually eat leftovers for lunch, but I've been hording those for our next rv trip. I like to freeze a bunch of pre-cooked meals, so I don't spend so much time cooking while we're on the road. Soups are always good since they go so far.

    Have a great weekend, Tina!

    1. Les, we tend to cook during the trip but I do take a backup meal in case it rains or we stay an extra day. Soup definitely works with a good bread!

  3. I'm going to check out The Lost Family. I love vegetable soup and yours looks very good. I'm not a fan of pasta so I never add it.

    1. Vicki, I love soup and it's always best homemade. The Lost family was very good but Dani Shapiro's book Inheritance is oe you may enjoy. It;s nonfiction, she had quite the revelation with that Ancestry test!

  4. Your week looks pleasant and normal! We are ready for some normal life now that we are back from a long trip -- and we started with a dinner of some vegetable soup after our full-day of driving home. Always a good thing. However, ours was just packaged tomato soup with corn salsa, not anything imaginative.

    1. Mae, your soup sounds good, I will add a corn salsa next time I make tomato soup. Your trip looked amazing! Loved the photos.

  5. I like to store away cooked chicken in the freezer to shorten the prep time of future meals. I used cooked frozen chicken this week in my cousin's pasta salad recipe. And then I didn't have to heat up the kitchen on an already hot day.

The Lost Family looks intriguing. I look forward to hearing more about it. I enjoyed Lessons in Chemistry so much.

    1. Deb, I hope Lessons in Chemistry is made for a movie. It reminded me of Mad Men with a different twist from the female perspective.
Great idea about freezing cooked chicken.

    1. Harvee, the soup only took a half hour to chop ingredients and then it just simmers away. Better the next day.

  8. I already added Lessons in Chemistry as per your comment to me. Someone else recently recommended Last Girl to Die. I've read a few of Helen Fields before and liked her. I just added Lost Family!

  10. I am overall not very good with chicken. No idea why as I actually love chicken. My husband bought a rotisserie chicken at Woolworths today and I just added a few fabulous side dishes. And apple crumble.

Anyways!! I also recently finished Lessons in Chemistry and I loved it!! I think a series will be great indeed!

Have a wonderful week and thanks for visiting us earlier!

  11. I love soups for lunch, even in hot weather! Last week I made a Turkey Chili Taco soup from skinnytaste (recipe link in my blog post). And I finally tried that chicken parmesan cutlet recipe you shared a few weeks ago. The Dijon mustard flavor boost was great! And there's nothing like a good Pouilly Fuisse!! Will have to pick some up next time we shop for wine. Enjoy the week, Tina.

  12. The soup looks delicious. I'm don't eat soup in the summer (too hot in Texas) but will definitely save that for the fall/winter. I hadn't heard about the DNA book but it sounds so interesting. Thanks for sharing!

  13. I'm seeing a lot of good things about Lessons in Chemistry. Sounds like a good one. I hope they do it well if they adapt it. Your soup looks good too!

  14. Lessons in Chemistry is one of those rare books that has been on my radar since it's release. I'm such a backlist reader, I usually don't really pay attention to new books. I'm glad you liked it!

The Lost Family sounds intriguing. I'll take a look at it.

    Enjoy your week!

Welcome and thank you so much for visiting. If I don't answer you here I will get back to you on your blog. Also have had to switch to approving comments due to some SPAM lately. Alas...

It's been a good run...........
