Plain Old White Bread

Thank you Sweet and Savory for following my blog :-)

I made bread!

For Christmas, my motorcycle ridin' Santa
brought me a real prize - a food processor that I have been drooling over for at least a year! It's been fun shredding blocks of cheese, veggies...and I can't wait to make cole slaw but I will wait until the weather is warmer.

For some reason, slaw seems like a warm weather side dish...with BBQ or grilled chicken. As I have been wanting to have more practice making bread, I am fortunate that this processor has a dough blade. Here is the first loaf of bread I have made using the processor.

It's good, but the best bread I have made so far is still Wandering Coyote's Garlic and Sun dried Tomato bread.

Here is what you'll need for plain old white bread in the food processor.........

1 package dry yeast

1 TB sugar

1/3 cup warm water (105 - 115F)

5 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

4 TB unsalted butter, in 1 inch pieces

2 teaspoons salt

1 1/3 cups cold water

Directions:

In a two cup liquid measure, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Stir, then let sit until foamy (about 5 minutes). Insert dough blade. Process flour, butter and salt on dough speed until combined, about 15 seconds. Combine yeast mixture with cold water.

With machine running on dough speed add liquid through feeding tube as fast as the flour will absorb it. Once the dough cleans the side of the work bowl and forms a ball, process 45 seconds to knead dough.

Place dough in lightly floured plastic food storage bag and seal it. Place the bag in a warm place and let sit until doubled, about an hour and half.

One the dough is doubled split it in half and roll out each piece on a floured surface. The directions tell you to roll it into a rectangle and roll up and seal the edges. Yeah...I didn't do that. I had flour and dough stuck all over my hands, the sleeve of my sweater which unrolled after I had my hands mired in sticky dough...so it was adorned with gummy dough too. I just kneaded the dough, turned it over and over and kneaded some more. Stretched it out and then formed a loaf. Repeated with the other ball of dough.

This
is what part of my kitchen looked like after I tried prying the wet dough off the blade, my hands, the counter.....

Grease up two loaf pans and pop the loaves in, covered with plastic wrap that I smeared a bit of vegetable oil on. Let it sit and rise for 1 hour.

Bake in a 400 degree oven for 35 minutes.

The following day we used the bread for breakfast - you know where you cut the hole in the middle and pop a raw egg inside, then fry it?

It was gooey deliciousness and way better than the Cheerios I've had to eat for my cholesterol!

Another cool gift I received was Cooks Magazine from Gregg, Barb and Mia. I look forward to trying recipes from this magazine to submit to Magazine Mondays. Stay tuned........

  1. I have the same food processor, only a little older and it's blue! And broken! Long story.

Great looking bread! I've only used the processor for bread once, but then again, I have a KitchenAid mixer.

  2. I didn't know they made them in blue. Cool...but bad that it is broken. I was torn between a mixer and processor to tell the truth.

  3. What lovely bread Tina. Kudos to YOU!!! Oh that kitchen is not so messy. You should see mine when I attempt to bake anything remotely "gooey." And you just couldn't have picked a better way to show case your golden loaf. I LOVE Toads in the Hole. Yummy!!!

I've been betwixt and between too. I don't know if I want a KitchenAid or a food processor. I'm really thinking I need both!!!

Thanks for sharing, Tina. Enjoy your loaf:)

  6. That's one awesome gift and I like the mag subscription too. I bet you're going to get so much use from them both! Your bread looks perfect and I love that you made eggs in a basket with it. That's one of my favorite breakfasts ;D

  8. I love the smell of it as it bakes. So comforting.

Thank you Louise. And I think you are correct - you really need both appliances. That is one reason I went back and forth between which one to go for first.

Dave - I was able to comment to your blog today. Sometimes I have trouble, I think it's our slow connection and some of the busier pages. Grrrr....I've been reading you everyday through Reader!

    Oh Janel....I love toast!

Kim, I did make out OK this Christmas :-) Thanks for the comment on the bread- it was good.

Fresh and Local Best- love that aroma of baking bread!
