I wanted to give any interested parties plenty of notice on this.
Sideways is the featured movie at Food 'n Flix for May and guess what - I am hosting!
Sideways is about wine, friendship and discovery. Two of the main characters are Miles and Jack, both in their forties and unmarried. Except Jack is soon to be married...and he is looking for one last fling if he can manage it and Miles just wants to introduce his friend to California's wine country.
Miles and Jack are played by Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church (not exactly eye candy but ...hey) and they take a week-long road trip to enjoy the sights of vineyards, sample wines and just chill out on their last bachelor outing.
Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh are the leading ladies. They are women who appreciate wine and want to become better acquainted with Miles and Jack.
Interesting fact about this movie (to me): Miles speaks passionately about Pinot noir and is outspoken about his hatred of Merlot. After the movie release in the U.S. (October 2004), Merlot sales dropped 2% while Pinot noir sales increased 16%. A similar trend occurred in British wine outlets according to "Sauce", a Food & Drink column in The Sunday Times. Wow....a movie caused a drop in sales of one particular wine ...over a comment. In a movie. That's amazing.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the disclaimer Marina! I wasn't offended by the depiction...I was offended by his personality! LOL! I had a hard time pulling inspiration from the movie...my mind didn't go to food and wine pairings. Maybe that's why it was a struggle for me. A fun struggle, but a struggle nonetheless!
I'll send you an email, but I just posted a Corn & Cheese Chowder for Sideways. Thanks for hosting--it was fun to watch this one again as it's been a while. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI finally got my post up! Thanks for hosting - I am looking forward to the roundup.
