April roundup
{food, books & projects}

The last weekend in April....can you believe it? We've had much going on with the house, Loki and some appointments.  The time seems to have flown by. Here's a roundup of food/books/projects.

Food / I made this from a recipe I found in a Food Network magazine.  A simple skillet meal with pasta.  Spaghettini with bacon, mushrooms and herbs. Recipe may be found HERE. It's quick and filling.

Reading / I had a scare when my Kindle locked up and gave me a white screen.  I was very sad to think it died but lo and behold, after much prodding, I was able to do a restart and it works! For the 2021 Historical Reading challenge I've read The Exiles, a historical fiction set in London and Australia and The Kew Garden Girls. Also a nonfction, The Search for God and Guinness.  I just started Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Productive reading month considering.

Watching / We finished Justified, all six seasons and it was great.  Now we are at a loss for new series and are hoping to get Yellowstone with Kevin Costner from the library.

Kitchen and bathroom remodel - We are still working on that project.  The estimate came in and we were given assigments to look at bathroom fixtures, kitchen sink and plumbing needs.  We are ahead of the curve with picking out paint, appliances and countertop. Yea! A date to start demolition has yet to be determined.
Oh, we also had nine trees removed from the front of the house.

That's it and I hope you all are healthy and happy where ever you are!

  1. Justified was great! Good luck with the kitchen remodel -- it can be stressful but the end result will be worth it.

    1. BFR- we also like Olyphant in Deadwood. We are both looking forward to the remodel & dreading the chaos, but the house is 40 years old and needs a boost!

  2. Devices that go blank and lock up are truly panic-inducing. My iPad has an occasional bad spell where it just shows the little rotating doom-circle, and it requires an hour of waiting before it can be restored to sanity. Some day I guess I’ll have to get a new one, along with a new keyboard, no doubt. I hope it won’t be soon.

    1. Mae, it’s sad when a device conks out, especially if you like the format & style of it. I didn’t want to get a new cover for the kindle & you know the new ones won’t fit in the old versions. I’m glad I still have time with mine.
I hope yours lasts a while longer!

  3. Great tip about Yellowstone from the library, I will have to check with our library. Funny thing, the series is filmed in my surrounding community...That pasta with bacon, looks delicious and I know my family would really enjoy it, have a great week ahead.

    1. Melynda, you must live in a beautiful part of the country. Now I’ll think about your home base when we see the scenery in the show.

  4. You had a nice productive month! The Exiles and The Kew Garden Girls are both on my TBR and my Kindle and just waiting to be read.

My Kindle is 7 years old now and I've had a scare or two myself. But it must just hang on a bit longer. Don't feel like a buying a new one now!

Have a good week and take care!

    1. Elza, I was beyond thrilled when my Kindle rebooted. I'll be interested in your reviews for the Exiles and the Kew Girls.

  5. You can't get me out of the kitchen now that we have remodeled. After seeing what new lighting and new flooring can do, we want to do the whole house.

Whew. I bet you were worried about your Kindle. I have a Fire, but I'm always thinking about a Paperwhite. Is that just a case of green grass on the other side of the fence?

I've never heard of spaghettini, but I think I'll look for it now. Anything with bacon is good.

    Have a great week, Tina!

  6. Loved Yellowstone!!
Re your comment about borrowing magazines from the library, I should have clarified that I borrowed the electronic version. I imagine ours has also stopped using hard copies of magazines as I have heard they no longer carry newspapers.

  7. You have had a lot going on this month! So glad your kindle came back to life. That happened to me a few times, too. I love reading on my kindle, though my daughter laughs at my large font. Good luck with the rest of your remodeling selections. Hope they get started (and finish) right on schedule. The pasta looks delicious!

  8. That pasta dish looks delicious!

Kitchen AND bathroom model sounds lovely but would be more than my nerves could handle. Oh wait...I dealt with that in my apartment, actually. I guess I blocked it out it was so traumatic. At least I didn't have to pay for any of it. Ha ha.

I inherited my Kindle Fire from my cousin who died 5-ish years ago and I don't know how long she had already owned it so I won't be surprised when it finally conks out on me. Glad you were able to revive yours!

  9. I CANNOT believe it's the end of April! wow how did that happen?

I bet Food Network has a ton of good recipes!

  10. That spaghetti looks delicious!

We travel with my husband's job and follow good weather as much as we're able. Everyone's pictures of azaleas and other spring flowers does make me homesick for spring in North Carolina. Oh well. We're planning a visit home in June now that we're vaccinated so we'll get to see early summer.

    Enjoy your week!

  11. That pasta dish looks wonderful. Anything with mushrooms and bacon is a hit with my family!

We loved Justified! I'm sure you've watched Timothy Oliphant in Deadwood, right? That's a great series, too. I haven't updated my list of recent favorites, but if you need some inspiration for a new-to-you series, I have several posted here.

Hope all continues to go well with your remodeling. 9 trees must have opened up a lot of space and given you more sunlight. We live in a forest and while I love the trees, I do wish we had more sunny spots in our yard. At least I don't have to tend to the moss. It grows all by itself. ;)

  12. You have been busy! Tree removal is never fun but hopefully it brightened up your space. Love the pic of Loki in the yard. He looks like he's really settling in! I haven't been cooking much lately though I did make some banana bread because I've been craving it lately! Good luck with the kitchen renovation!
