In my kitchen

It's the monthly event at Sherry's Pickings to see what folks around the globe have going on their kitchens.  Not much new in mine this time as I've not acquired anything but perishables.

These Baby Gold potatoes are great for roasting.  I had not seen this brand before and picked up a package to try.

They roasted well with carrots and onions.

Only one of these tomatoes came from our garden. Still very happy about that though, growing our own tomatoes :-)  The point of showing you this is the cooling rack.

I read that tomatoes can go bad quicky sitting on a countertop.  This tip suggested to store the tomatoes on a cooling rack so they get air and place the stem end downward as it can handle the weight better.  Will report if this works as I have just transfered the tomatoes to the rack.

This Pouilly Fuisse is nector...it's amazing.  The texture and taste get an A+

That's a wrap as I am trying to clean out the kitchen and rest of the house.

  1. Always a new way to keep the tomatoes fresh and tasty! I hope this one works. I have been convinced that they shouldn't be in the refrigerator, though sometimes I need them to keep longer than they would at room temp.

    1. Mae, I have not tried the fridge yet. It gets so hot and humid here so that may be a good option for me if this doesn't work.

  4. I'll be trying a rack for tomatoes soon. It seems they aren't lasting nearly as long as they used to, neither are bananas

    1. Vicki, I agree, the bananas go off too soon after buying.

  5. I have read about placing tomatoes stem end downward but not on a rack. I do that in my wooden vegetable holder but I am not convinced it works.

  6. Ohh, love Pouilly Fuisse... they can be a little pricey, but a delicious treat! I keep my tomatoes stems down, but hadn't heard about the rack before. Let us know if it makes a difference.

  7. I learned many, many years ago to keep tomatoes out of the refrigerator, but I had no idea about the trick to place them on a baking rack. I'll have to give it a try.

    1. Les, I have some good tomatoes about to turn red on my vines. Just got home from a camping trip so I'm glad they didn't get overripe. Will try this trick,

  8. Let us know if the rack works. As others have said, I had heard stem down but the rack is new. I will look for that wine, I think the brand is widely available. I've roasted those potatoes, they are delicious.

    1. Liz, it does seem to work! The tomatoes lasted longer so I will keep a cooling rack reserved for tomatoes.

  9. I to like Pouilly Fuisse. I'll make a note to buy a bottle next week. So funny that you have tomatoes ... it's still about 3 weeks before we put tomatoes in the garden around here.

    1. BFR - we are getting a very small harvest right now. Thing is, it gets so iincredibly hot here we don't have a long season. Oh that wine....it's so good but a treat we reserve for now and then.

    1. Melynda, agreed - the fresh ingredients make the best dinners. I like a takeaway meal now and then but nothing beats homemade!

  12. I had no idea you can store tomatoes like that, have to try it! My dad often gets heaps of them in summer and it's a pain trying to find the spoilt ones before they ruin more! On a different note the wine looks amazing :)
