Man wine is a pinotage from coastal south africa. The name Man is derived from the name of the vintnors' wives - Marie, Anette and Nicky. Three friends who had a great idea and evidently the means and drive to build a successful business.
Charles Back is one of the driving forces of the "Man team," operating as owner and cellarmaster. Mr. Back is guy behind the success of the "Goats do Roam" wines. Love Goats do Roam......affordable and quaffable. Recently I had read that Chales Back " lives in a cave on the hillside of Paarl Mountain with a ferocious band of wild goats. Owner/Cellarmaster of SPICE ROUTE WINES and FAIRVIEW, highly acclaimed winery and fine cheese maker extraordinaire."
We had Man Pinotage with steak and it was a pretty good match. Berry flavors, long legs and held up well to grilled beef.
A quote from the vintenors:
"We like to call it extreme terroir -
Grape growing in the Perdeberg Hills is not for wimps. There is little rainfall, so you have to be in tune with your vineyards. Too much crop or too much stress and you end up with grapes that can't ripen, or worse. But this is grape growing heaven for generations of our farmers. There are no fat, lazy bloated grapes here. A little work on the vine makes for bold, concentrated flavour. Our old shale soils provide minerality and complexity. We try to keep it simple in the cellar and let the uniqueness that is the Perdeberg show through in the wines."
It's certainly a pinotage we would try again. I would also like to try their Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz.
