When Brandied Eggnog gives you a buzz..... counter with Donna Hay's Quiche ♥

We are late getting the tree up. I guess. We have never adhered to a particular schedule or planned which day we would decorate. This was the first year I thought we may not do it at all......but...we were motivated by drinks and foods and the promise of a good time.

The idea was to make all sorts of appetizers and I honestly don't know why that fell apart. Poor planning on my part, that's what I am thinking. We started with rich eggnog liberally laced with brandy and a sprinkle of nutmeg.

Between sips, and hanging ornaments, we nibbled on Camembert and crackers. But do you know...eggnog-laced alcohol has a way of sneaking up on you and then you have this enormous sugar buzz and slight alcohol buzz as well.

Thankfully I had a planned on a modified version of Donna Hay's ham and cheddar quiche. That was an easy thing to toss together and bake while we were busy. Thing was, I didn't have any ham. But I did have some wonderful smoked sauasge. It's just the best, I love that stuff.

Finally the quiche was ready..........It was excellent. And there were leftovers so that's always good.

Smoked ham Sausage and Cheddar Quiche
recipe copied from Donna Hay's site

1 quantity (350g) shortcrust pastry (or a store bought one for short cuts!)
Filling

200g smoked ham, chopped
½ cup grated aged cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf parsley
4 eggs
1½ cups (375ml) single (pouring) cream
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
sea salt and cracked black pepper
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Roll out the pastry on a floured surface to 3mm (1/8 in) thick and line a 28 cm (11 in) quiche dish. Blind bake the pastry shell (see recipe) and set aside to cool. Reduce the oven to 160°C (325°F). Sprinkle the tart shell with the ham, cheese and parsley. Whisk together the eggs, cream, mustard, salt and pepper. Pour over the filling in the tart shell. Bake for 40 minutes or until set. Serve warm or cold in wedges with a simple green salad. Serves 6.

One last look at the nog

Perhaps I can plan better and we can have an appetizer laden new year's eve fest. We will see.

This quiche is my contribution to the potluck theme at I ♥ Cooking Club. Enjoy!!

  1. Ever since I made those Chocolate Marshmallow Ice Cream Cupcake Cones I posted about the other day, I have been on such a White Russian kick that I have even been thinking about mixing it with some Egg Nog. Perhaps I better not:)

We don't have many Christmas decorations around here but a tipsy "Charlie Brown" Tree just wouldn't be right.

Thanks for sharing, Tina. I'm glad you had no ham, smoked sausage sounds so much better!!!

  2. Oh my Tina that sounds like the best kind of "didn't go strictly according to plan" I've heard of in ages. Enjoy! Mrs L x

  4. I am of the mind that decorating and all the holiday fal-der-ral never goes to plan! We just muddle through the days, doing a little at a time and enjoying each little task as it comes ... may have to take your cue though and get a batch of doctored eggnog prepared for the next task (writing the Christmas cards!). I love the idea of a 'trim the tree' party ... how many helpers did you have?

  7. I forget how easy it is to put quiche together during busy times. I like that you used smoked sausage instead of ham - sounds delicious!

  8. Your quiche looks so plump and bursting with good things! ;-) And that eggnog looks pretty tasty too, Even if it wasn't to plan it looks like a pretty great evening to me! ;-)

  9. "Best laid plans...", as they say!! Love the sound of the smoked sausage in your quiche - I think I would like that even better than the ham _ and I'm really impressed that you managed to pull a quiche together after an eggnog and camembert fuelled evening. I probably would have just scoffed a bit more cheese and called it a day!

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas xo
