I am not a fan of Will Ferrell, not at all, but this is the one movie I think he does an excellent job. It's a very unusual story line.
To describe this movie would ruin it because it’s just so quirky, it defies an explanation without spoiling the plot and ending. All I will say is, Emma Thompson plays an author who writes about a man named Harold Crick (played by Will Ferrell) Mr. Crick is an Internal Revenue Service auditor. Can you think of anything more odious? Crick may well be more than a creation of her imagination.
Maggie Gyllanhaal plays Ana Pascal, a baker who changes Crick’s life. One of my favorite scenes…Harold brings Ana flours.

I Brought You Flours
[Harold gives Ana bags of flour and confesses his love for her.]
Harold Crick: Miss Pascal, I've been odd and I... I know that I've been odd. And... I want you.
Ana Pascal: What?
Harold Crick: There are so many reasons, so many influences in my life that are telling me, at times quite litterally, that I should have come here and bring you these. But... but I'm doing this because I want you.
Ana Pascal: You want me?
Harold Crick: In no uncertain terms.
Ana Pascal: Isn't there some very... clearer and established... rule about... fraternization?
Harold Crick: Auditor/ auditee protocol?
Ana Pascal: Yeah!
Harold Crick: Yeah, but I don't care.
The movie is peculiar and strange yet you want to know what will happen to Harold and Ana and the other characters. There is also a good scene where Ana makes cookies for Harold...but he doesn't want to accept them. "How can anyone not like cookies?!"

Here is what I am bringing to the party.
Cookies and Peach Jam Bars.
The jam bars are modified from a Donna Hay recipe in Classics 2. This is also a linkup for Potluck Theme at I Heart Cooking Club.

Simply tip a stick of softened butter into a food processor. Mix with 1 cup AP flour, a teaspoon baking powder and 1/3 cup sugar. Then add 1 egg yolk. Once it's a nice smooth dough, spread in a pan and top with a favorite jam. I used peach for this one.

And here are the cookies!

Go check out Deb's post and watch Stranger Than Fiction. Even if you aren't a fan of Ferrell, this one is strangely good. Don't forget Potluck at IHCC. See ya later!
I have not seen this movie, but I think that he is funny in "Bewitched" with Nicole Kidman! Haha!
ReplyDeleteHave seen the post at Deb's and sounds like a fun event, connecting movies to food.
These cookies and bars looks great, makes a satisfying treat for tea-time! And for snacking anytime we want!
Will Ferrell really surprises people in this one--I am really glad you enjoyed this quirky film. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThe *flours* scene is one of my favorites too. I love a good cookie and adore jam bars so I would happily munch on both of these treats!
Thanks for joining in Food 'N Flix this month Tina!
KF, I haven't seen Bewitched...hmmm. Hey, you still have time to join in on Food 'n Flix if you want! Thanks for visiting :-)
ReplyDeleteDeb, good choice for the month's movie, we had fun.
Your chocolate chip cookies look great but I must admit it's those jam bars that are calling my name! Wonderful choice for potluck.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen this movie, but your description makes me want to. And giving a baker flours. ..well I love a good (and bad!) pun.
ReplyDeleteThe jam bars look great and like they can be whipped up in no time. I have some blackberry jam in my fridge right now...
I have to confess that I love Ferrell's other movies, too (Ricky Bobby), but this one is my new fave. I am always looking for ways to use up jam so thanks for posting a great way!
ReplyDeleteI liked Will Ferrell in this too, although I am not usually a fan. Great chocolate chip cookies - they look ever so tempting.
ReplyDeleteMust admit, I'm not big on Will Ferrall either, but I've heard so many people say he's great in this role that I should give it a chance.
ReplyDeleteI love a good jam bar, and peach ones sound extra good. Love the quick and easy nature of this recipe - definitely a "must try" for me.
Zosia, the jam bars are wonderfully simple to make. Not as easy to resist.
ReplyDeleteMichelle, blackbery jam sounds very good!
Debra, I liked Ferrell on Saturday Night Live but can't warm up to him in movies.
Cake Law, those cookies didn't last long :-)
Sue, I hope you like them. When is peach season in New Zealand?
YUMMY!!!Jam bars!!!
ReplyDeleteCome get one, TeaLady!
ReplyDeleteI have to say I was moved also with the 'I Brought You Flours' moment. Love your cookies and bars.
ReplyDeleteThanks, CEE, I had a good time revisiting this movie. All those sweets are now looong gone!
