Big changes in our kitchen!

Finally we are (mostly) unpacked and things have been put in cabinets and drawers.  It's amazing the things you collected over 30 years in a home.  You find many items that were dupicates or not needed so...off to the charity shop.  Here are some before and after photos of the kitchen.

I tried to get photos taken at the same spot so you can see the changes.  The inside of the house is T 111 paneling and while it would look good in a mountain cabin, it's rather dark for a Florida home.

After
- this is so much brighter and modern. We kept the brick floors.  Love the brick.

Before
Wooden panel to separate the livng room, a fluorescent light and stainless divided sink

After
The back wood panel wasn't removed, it was tiled over.  Also a cabinet was added and a lovely pendant light. Replaced the divided stainless sink with a farmhouse sink.

The former countertop was butcher block laminate. This was replaced with a light colored granite.

Also, under the cabinet lighting made a huge difference.

There was one sorry light in the ceiling before.  That was removed and replaced with LED recessed lighting.  The photos do not capture just how light it is in here now. Amazing transformation!

We had been using a cart as a coffee bar, storing other items in the small cabinet.   Of course I needed more space for additional casserole dishes and the giant microwave. By the way, that microwave was massive and about 20 years old!

This is the new coffee bar.  They did an excellent job on it and now we have loads of storage space. The old microwave is gone and replaced with an over the stove model.

The red casserole dish sitting there was a birthday gift from our son.  He sent a beautiful Le Creuset ceramic baking dish which was put to use right away.

I make this easy chicken dish quite a bit because you don't need much prep and it's fast.

By the way, the remodel was done by H & H Construction in case anyone in our area is interested. Highly recommended :-)  I may post the bathroom remodel photos upcoming as those were pretty big changes as well.

  1. Your new kitchen looks fabulous. White is my favorite kitchen color no matter what the current style dictates. It's just less gloomy! I wish you a long life cooking there.

    1. Thank you Mae! I am absolutely loving this kitchen. I should’ve mentioned that the color is an off-white but I do see how it looks that way in the photos. I need to learn to use the air fryer feature in this oven.

    2. I love the farmhouse sink, but here is a probably stupid question...if the sink is not divided, how do you keep dirty dishes separate from the clean rinsed ones? lol

    3. The new dishwasher is used more than the old one. But, we have a plastic washing tub that fits in the sink and only takes up half the area. We put the washed items on the rack in the bottom. The great thing about the large farmhouse sink is it accommodates those large roasting pans, big saucepans, etc without a lot of maneuvering with a divided sink.
      Plus it’s a beauty 😀

  4. It's SO pretty, and so much storage! The coffee bar is so neat, and the sink you chose is beautiful. Like you, I love the brick floors. I'd have kept them, too. I'm so happy for you and Doug, to have a space you love even more now.

    1. Stacy, it’s a great use of space. The brick is real brick too, not a laminate so sometimes an uneven place here and there. But I love it.

    1. Les, the brick is indeed cool in summer & I don’t often see real brick in homes these days. The house is 40 years old.

  7. It looks gorgeous and so light and bright! I do love a white kitchen and I love your light fixtures and sink choice. When we redo our kitchen I want to do a brick tile with white cabinets. I love the way that looks in my head so I'm thrilled to see it done in your pictures. It looks as good as I pictured!

    1. Thank you, Melynda. It was quite a change being away for 6 weeks and it is great to be home. It made us realize we could probably have a house built elsewhere if we choose not to stay inn the area,

    1. Tandy, when they were done with the remodel the workers cleaned the kitchen! There was dust around and they mopped up and did such a great job with the brick. Thanks so much for your comment!

  19. Your new kitchen (and the floor and the bathrooms) has made such a difference. Very lovely. Where in Florida did you move? It looks like you are making some very major changes to the house. I hope you were able to add air conditioning.

    1. Liz, Thank you so much! We live in Havana, that is on the outskirts of Tallahassee. It’s a rule area so the farmhouse look works in here. We definitely have air-conditioning!
