Birds: Could someone help me with identification, please :-)

I need advice for a good basic bird book so if you have a suggestion it will be most welcome.  These birds here have recently arrived in an area in Tallahassee.

Could anyone help me identify this bird?  We hadn't seen them before and it started with a group of four.  Three white birds and one dark gray.  Then a few days later more arrived.

They are rather large.

I'm just curious about them so any advice is welcome!

  1. Those are ibis — white ibis and glossy ibis (the oddball black one is the glossy ibis), They are related to the Egyptian ibis that you see in carvings from ancient Egypt.

We’ve seen them in Florida and South Carolina. The Audubon bird app is free and quite useful.

    1. Mae, thank you so much! I downloaded the app and am adding my bird sightings now. It’s wonderful.

  2. My comments from my iPad have been disappearing, so this is a second try. The white birds are white ibis, and the one black one is a glossy ibis. The Audubon bird app is free and useful.

    1. I had to start approving comments as the spam was getting out of hand.

  3. Yes, they're definitely ibis. The white ones are everywhere around us. People joke about them being "Sanibel chickens", but the black ones are pretty rare on the island.

    1. Sanibel chickens, I love it! I’m thinking the black one may be a juvenile. They came in droves then disappeared after the big rains.

  4. I learned about a great app for identifying birds/animals/plants from photos in my naturalist group. It's called iNaturalist and it is very good at identifying living things. I also like an app for children called Seek. It's even simpler to use.
