In My Kitchen with Trader Joe's
This month my kitchen has had many old standbys prepared for dinner but we did manage to try some new items from trader Joe's store. Some were great and some weren't.
The salmon and sprouts were a success and absolutely delicious. Doug grilled both and it was an excellent meal.
Orange Chicken is a customer favorite at Trader Joe's and it's certainly one we will purchase again. I added a bag of stir fry veggies to the chicken as it cooked and it was better than the take-away we usually buy for a Friday evening. Thanks to my friend Stacey in Texas for telling me about this Orange chicken. We also made pot stickers and it was a perfect meal.
Below: These were the non-winners in the kitchen this month. The Creamy Pink Primavera pasta sauce was listed as a T.J. customer favorite so we gave it a try. Oh, it was so bad. I mean the kind where you are about to scrape your tongue it was such a bad taste. I should add, this is our opinion and taste buds. :-) Obviously for it to be a fan favorite someone loves it. We resorted to opening a jarred pasta sauce that's in the emergency supplies to put on the remaining angel hair pasta after binning the original meal.
The Crunch Rolls used to be good but this batch was dry. Probably I am done buying them.
Hummus! I love hummus. Here is a sandwich I made with a tomato basil hummus spread. Lettuce and tomato on toasted bread. Easy lunch to take to work.
I'll share this sandwich with Deb for Souper Sundays.

Trader Joe’s sells a lot of my favorites too. I have read bad things about their tomato products, though, so your pasta experience confirms them. And I just came back from a total failure of TJ’s — they have NO charcoal! I had to go to Whole Foods for it, which is very expensive.

We love Brussels sprouts too. I usually roast them, but may try grilling them. We buy only a very few things at Trader Joe's. I don't know why the store never really clicked with us.
ReplyDeleteYes to TJ's cheese! We also get a salsa, the harvest grain mix, the barley and farro, and no-salt tortilla chips. I need to do more exploring of the store. They've been here only a handful of years and I don't think I've ever just wandered around to see what's really there.
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of Trader Joe's . However, there are things I really love but I do find some things that are duds! I stopped buying their pasta sauces long ago. I couldn't find one I ever liked.
ReplyDeleteI just finishing saying to Beth that hummus has been on my mind to make for a while...
ReplyDeleteTrader Joe's, we don't have any in Canada, I keeping saying, and it falls on deaf ears, that I want to check it out next time we're in the States.
Orange chicken, I still make my mother's original recipe from the 70s, but upgraded.
No Trader Joe's here, and I've never heard of Shrimp Crunch Rolls! Doesn't sound as though I'm missing much.
ReplyDeleteWow these all look delicious!
ReplyDeleteWe don’t have Trader Joes and I’ve never been to one - would be great. Cheers from Carole’s Chatter
ReplyDeleteI like a milkshake or smoothie with oats in it. It's a great breakfast option in summer. The beetroot tortillas are fun and would make any burrito look good with bright greens enclosed. I've done a bit of fried rice recently as a way of using up what's in the fridge. I don't know why we don't make it more often.

I usually buy canned goods at Trader Joes, and I love their instant oatmeal. I have it for breakfast every morning.
ReplyDeleteThe salmon and Brussels sprouts looks delicious as does your sandwich with the hummus. Thanks for sharing it with Souper Sundays this week. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love brussels sprouts and i love salmon so that would be a winner for me, not that i've ever thought of putting them together:-) Hubby does some wonderful roasted sprouts for dinner now and then. What exactly is trader joe's? a grocery store, a deli? they make ready made meals? have a great month, and thanks for joining in IMK. cheers sherry
ReplyDeleteWoop! I made the blog! Good to know, about the pasta sauce. How disappointing! Now I'm hungry for more TJ's orange chicken! AND dark chocolate peanut butter cups. TJ's and Costco are farrrrr for us, but Sam's is just an hour away and we are going to check it out soon. It's been over ten years since we've been there.
ReplyDeleteHow good are brussel sprouts! Shari from www.goodfoodweek.com.au
ReplyDeleteBrussels sprouts and grilled salmon... delicious. Not familiar with trader joes? Happy August :)
ReplyDeleteI am on my way to TJ's this morning, it's timely I am reading your post. The salmon is surprisingly wonderful isn't it? We had some last week and grilled it as well. I've never tried grilling Brussels sprouts, good idea.
