Rye Bread and Orphan Soup

This week has flown by for us. The last time we were out together shopping was over a week ago. We stocked up on a few basics such as cereal, fresh veggies, oils and cheese.

I can see in the future we will have conversations pondering what do you miss most and name things like bananas, bread flour, tomatoes and....I hate this one...wine.
Down to 6 bottles now, not including my massive bottle of white in the fridge that is dipping below the halfway mark. La Vieille Ferme is a nice quaffable wine for warm evenings and I also use it in cooking.

Still....not going out for at least two weeks especially as Florida is supposed the peak with this virus mess within that time period. For now I can be wistful and healthy.

Today I want to share this nice loaf of rye bread. It was baked in a loaf pan instead of a round loaf so I could make some sandwiches and toast for breakfast.

Here is another dish to share that's easy if you have some of the pantry items on hand. This Pasta Pompeii makes an appearance on the table now and then for it’s simplicity and fresh ingredients. This is a vegetarian dish but I imagine you could omit the Parmesan cheese if you wanted it vegan.

Last but not least, here is a hodgepodge of veggies I am calling Orphan Soup. There were tiny bits and portions of veggies languishing in the crisper. Seven asparagus in great shape but not enough for a side dish serving. One single yellow crookneck squash, onions, a few green beans,  four ears of corn that needed cooking pronto and two boneless chicken thighs. I am not wasting anything.  Note: You can make this soup vegetarian by omitting the chicken...obviously.

We sat outside and enjoyed soup, watching birds and squirrels and reading.  Lazy days staying at home.  Another week will be our two week period without contact other than each other so we may venture out for restocking.  I am out of potatoes but can work around that.  Bread flour would be a real score but I am not hopeful there.

So, tell me....outside world...what is going on in your home state/country?  What are you missing or cooking or reading?

  1. The best soup I ever had was a mix of stuff I had in my pantry. No meat, just canned stuff. The Orphan Soup looks good!

Staying home isn't really bothering me too much. I do work 4-5 hours most days but then it's home until it's time to go back to work.

    Stay safe!

    1. That does make the best soup, I agree! It’s not been too hard staying home but I wish we had internet.

  2. Orphan soup is a great word for it. We have been very lucky because one neighbor is still grocery shopping in person and has brought us a few things. Additionally, our curbside pickup market, while having a longer and longer wait time, is still functioning, and it includes wine. I hope you have really nice weather to make up for your lack of groceries!

    1. Mae, we are having mostly great weather so that makes up for it! If we lived IN Tallahassee then we could get delivery. I wear a mask when I absolutely have to go in a store. Glad to hear your neighbor brings you things, that’s very nice.

  3. Same here. Luckily John had made wine and he was able to bottle it at the beginning of April. One person at a time allowed into the store to bottle, so we are good for a couple of months. He placed another order this week that will be ready in 2 months.
Orphan soup, like it. I made soup yesterday and John asked me what it was called, I said refrigerator soup. It was made from the odds and ends I had frozen, bits of veg, ends of chopped veg, wrinkly tomatoes and the last spoonful of Chinese curry!! To which I added garlic and onions along with frozen kale.

    1. I like your soup too. Adding curry, great idea!

  4. I've been shopping once a week, taking a daily walk, and staying in the rest of the time. Although I haven't been drinking wine (I mostly drink while socializing), it seems to be available at the supermarkets and Total Wine delivers. I heard that some of the beaches in Florida my re-open soon with restrictions..

    1. I see the Jacksonville beach opened but I didn’t see any social distancing! I will probably get a wine trip in next week. Thanks for the tip on growing green onions!

  5. Our governor just canceled school for the rest of the year, yesterday. Our state (Iowa) works in regions and a point system. Our region is at a 10 score which means we must stay at home until April 30. Today is our oldest's 20th birthday, so we are trying to do things here at home to make it special.

    1. Our Governor did the same, no school but maybe it will open for the next year. Thanks for sharing about your state, it’s interesting how each state handles this crisis.
I hope your son had a good birthday celebration.

  6. Just when we thought we might be seeing the end of our confinement, our governor in Wisconsin extended our safer-at-home order through the end of May. But, they are going to allow golf courses to open and possibly allow the library to have curbside pickup. I am getting to the grocery store about once a week and am able to find most things. We are thankful for nice weather!

    Stay well!

  8. I really can't think of much that I am missing, other than going out to catch up with friends, and generally doing things. We are doing lots of interesting things online but it's not quite the same

    1. Marg, I’m content at home reading and walking but just running to the store for something is such a planning event now. I do miss using internet at Starbucks or restaurants.

  9. Wow! No Internet? :( Here in Mass., we're told we're in the peak time, then we're told we're maybe not, after all. I had been maintaining hopes for modified events to be allowed to happen after May 4th (our current orders run until then) but those hopes are diminishing fast with every new June event that gets canceled around here!
I made Anything Soup a couple of weeks ago! I agree that some of my best soups have been made from ingredients that I just happened to have on hand that needed to be used up and they can never be replicated because I don't remember how I made them. My husband stocked up on wine a couple of weeks ago, but that was four bottles of Riesling (my fave) and one bottle of sherry for him (which he hasn't opened). He didn't account for the fact that I'm home every single gosh-darn night now and that means wine at night more often than not, so what might have been plenty of wine before, isn't now! Oh, well. If that's my worst shortage to deal with, I'll be very lucky!

    1. Laurie, yeah....no internet so no streaming or movies that aren’t dvd. For big updates on the phone or updating apps we used to go to Starbucks or someplace with screaming fast internet. But everything is closed!

Pantry style soups are so good and of course always different. I’m probably drinking more wine but at the same time trying to conserve. That makes no sense!

  10. I love the idea for Orphan Soup but am never good at putting stuff together like that! It's weird here. My husband has been the one going out for supplies and for the past few weeks it's been very quiet and subdued but when he went to the grocery store Friday he said apparently people are over the whole pandemic thing. People had on masks and what not but the grocery store was jammed with whole families and people were disobeying the one way aisle rules that were in place and not worrying at all about social distancing. And he said he almost couldn't find a parking space at Lowe's when he had to go there for these specific air filters we use because of my allergies. I really feel like the curve is flattening but I think people here are relaxing too soon and we're going to see a spike. I wish I could send you bread flour! I get the 10lb bags from King Arthur and had just gotten one before all this started. I don't think it would be a good thing to mail though. My all purpose is starting to run low though and that's impossible to find here.

You asked about the book I mentioned Tuesday - Who Speaks for the Damned by CS Harris. It's straight historical mystery - no horror in sight - and really good. It's darker then a cozy but not overly grizzly. More of a procedural style I think. I think you might enjoy it but start at the beginning of the series.

    1. Thanks for the heads upon the CS Harris books. I will definitely start at the beginning, it sounds good.
Thanks also for your thought about the bread flour. Here there seems to be plants if all purpose!

Totally agree with you about people not practicing the proper distancing, I see it all the time when we take a drive. Our county has required the citizens to wear masks but yesterday I was the only one with one on when we pulled up to a restaurant. I’m trying to stay healthy!

  11. Everything is pretty quiet here in SWFL, beaches closed, etc. The photos of all the people on Jacksonville Beach blew my mind - yikes! We'll probably venture out to the grocery store tomorrow. That should be an adventure! Hope you get to restock the wine soon... I'd be getting nervous about that, lol! Just started a Barbara Kingsolver novel, Unsheltered, yesterday and am enjoying it so far. Glad you and Doug are doing well :)

    1. Let me know how you like the Kingsolver book. I have a load of new mysteries on a Kindle sale from Amazon. Yes, the scene at Jacksonville beach was horrifying! We went our for an oil change and got to Trader Joe's, they have good produce at a reasonable price. Stay well!

  12. It looks like you are eating well. Things are quiet here--you can't be on the beach unless you are using it to cross to the ocean for watersports right now and visitors are supposed to quarantine for 14 days. I am working out of the office a few days a week & home the rest but I miss the freedom. But still, I count my blessings. Thanks for sharing your soup--it looks delicious. I like soups made from random ingredients the best. ;-)

    1. That's a drag you can't go to the beach. It's more important to err on the side of safety though! I'm happy to bring soup to the party anytime 😋

  13. Love the idea of orphan soup. We're eating pretty well, even if we don't have a ton of variety. Frozen veggies has helped a lot. I do miss browsing the grocery produce section and I miss the farmers market sooooooo much.

  14. I went on a grocery outing this morning. I am dying to find whole wheat flour, but I did get some King Arthur bread flour at Target (of all places). I was a bit perplexed that our grocery store was a bit empty (shelves). I am kind of enjoying the creativity of cooking here.
