Here is the lighthouse which greets you when you first come across the bridge.
The bridge as seen from a distance as we were on the way. The new bridge is much higher and gives spectacular views. Sometimes pelicans drift by near the rails. You can see the old bridge on the left side. This one was very low, part of it remains on both sides of the island and many people gather there to fish.
Sea oats along the gulf side. Before hurricane Michael the dunes were so high you couldn't see the water. It will be decades before the dunes reform.
That's it for me today. Planning another short trip for next week so the RV needs to be cleaned out, restocked with food and books :-)
Happy Friday to all.
My brother and his family might have been on St. George Island when you were there! How is it driving the RV across that bridge? I've driven ours across a few that are VERY high and I have to concentrate on looking straight ahead and not get freaked out by how high we are! Glad you have another trip lined up. We had thought about going next week, but the entire area is going to get rain & wind, so we'll go another time.
ReplyDeleteLes, that would have been amazing but you know, we could have spoken to them and not known it. I didn't see any Oregon plates but maybe your brother is from another state. Talked to a few Pennsylvania folks and was great to hear about the Phillies games and just chat.
DeleteThe bridge is large enough that I don;t think you'd have a roblem. When Doug had a motorcycle we would go across so many tims, just to go eat a seafood lunch :-)
Wow...DECADES for the sand dunes to return. Imagine that!
ReplyDeleteJinjer, that storm took such a toll on the area. There were photos of a stop sign with sand right up to the bottem of the sign.
DeleteThank you, Vicki. It's a 2 hour drive from our home and we had not been for ages.
ReplyDeleteIt's always nice to get away even for a short time. It's a pity about the damage that storms cause. Love your photos.
ReplyDeleteJudee, I agree. I love hearing the sound of the gulf waters as they crash on the shoreline. You can hear that from the campground :-)
DeleteThe long term devastation from hurricanes is always so shocking. I remember going to Biloxi in the mid-90s and you could still see damage from Camille. There were a number of lots that still had staircases up to houses that no longer existed. Katrina wiped that out and did more of course. St. George Island looks beautiful and so peaceful.
