November In My Kitchen

Hello November! It's hard to believe there are only 2 months left of 2021. Two more pension checks, 53 days until Christmas, two weeks until we head out for our Thanksgiving camping trip. Yikes.

Let's get right to the meager offerings I have for the In My Kitchen event.  Also, sending good wishes to Sherry and hope her broken ribs are on the mend. Thinking of you, Sherry!

In the kitchen / I have had luck with the recipes of Tieghan Gerrad of Half Baked Harvest lately. Chicken, Pancetta and Mushroom stew and  several more recipes to try soon.

I'm still baking bread. Baguette is our favorite.

Sipping /   I transitioned from whites to reds as I am a seasonal sipper. I try any unoaked Chardonnay I see and this one is not only inexpensive it's tasty. A Kendall Jackson brand. But the rest of the whites and a single Rose sits in the wine cooler awaiting warmer temperatures.

This Joel Gott Cabernet Sauvignon is now one of my favorite reds. It's hearty and smooth.  Perfect for the cooler evenings.

Sweets from World Market - a sleeve of Hit cookies.  Great with coffee.

This time of year World Market gets tiny mince pies in and we always get a box.  For whatever reason mince isn't always readily available around here so I go the store bought route. We loved these when we visited Ireland at Christmas time decades ago.

A new crossword book.  That's  cheap entertainment for me.  Usually I read on my Kindle if I am in the kitchen just stirring or checking on things but occasionally I like to fiddle with a crossword puzzle.

Is it a soft shell taco or fajita wrap?  Either way, it was great with seasoned beef strips and loads of onions, peppers and sour cream. Great lunch "sandwich."

That's it for me right now.  I hope you are happy and healthy and look forward to seeing what's in your kitchen this month.

  1. I want to start making my own bread because with only two of us we never finish a whole loaf before it starts going bad. There are only a few 1/2 lb. bread makers out there and that's the way I want to go. I don't even remember what happened to my 1st bread maker.

I've never seen Hit cookies, guess I'll have to look closer. I have never had a mince pie so a mini one is the perfect thing to try.

I love crosswords and number finds, my husband only did number finds.

I love all taco/fajita's. I love all Mexican food. When I went to Mexico I really liked the food there but I'm so used to our food that it wasn't as good to me as the American Mexican food.

One day I'm going to get my reading, reviewing, meme act together and post more.

    1. Vicki, I use my bread machine in the dough setting only to get an unfinished dough, not a fully baked loaf. Then I shape it or add anything else to it & let rise before baking. It saves my time.

Oh, I love mince pie, grew up with it for holidays in our home.

  2. Oh, wow. That baguette looks amazing!! We like Joel Gott's cabs, too. This entire post has me craving all sorts of food & wine. Thanks! ;)

    1. Les, I can’t seem to go wrong with Joel Gott. I like the Chardonnay as well. Claudia suggested Sauvignon Blanc.

  3. I wonder if a lot of us are slowing down in buying new and unusual foods and kitchen gadgets. To me it doesn't mean I won't write what's happening In My Kitchen to share with Sherry! I'm glad you are still writing too.

I transitioned from crossword puzzles to Sudoku -- have you tried it?

    1. Mae, I haven’t tried Suduko, my father-in-law loved those puzzles. I’m willing to try!

  4. I've had good luck with Tieghan Gerrad's recipes, too... even bought a copy of her second cookbook for my daughter and convinced my sister to get one, too. We've only had one or two cooler nights here (with overnight lows under 70) but did get a sampling of reds from Total Wine so we're ready. I've got sheet pan beef fajitas on the meal plan for this weekend - yum!

    1. JoAnn, I like her second cookbook better and am finding so many recipes to try. Your fajitas sound great, love those. Also, the Stanley Tucci book you’d mentioned on your site sounds so good and I can’t wait for the library to get my copy.

  5. So wonderful to see your bread! There's just nothing like the smell of your own bread filling up the kitchen ... I love crosswords but I'm much better at the number ones like sudoku

    1. DoS- I love the aroma of bread wafting through the kitchen! Always makes me hungry. I really need to try Suduko.

  6. That chicken stew sounds delicious! I have got to get to World Market for their holiday tea! I stock up every year. I am about out!

    1. Debra, we don’t get to World Market often now that we’re retired, it’s waaaaay over on the other side of Tallahassee. I went to check out a laptop at a store near there so we browsed at local shops. They have a good variety of Asian foods and chocolates too.

  7. I need to get bread baking again now that the weather has cooled. I hate turning on the oven in the summer (no central A/C here). I don't think I've made any Gerrad recipes. I'll have to look for the cookbooks with both your and JoAnn's recommendations. My mom loved Kendall Jackson Chard, so seeing one here made me smile.

BTW: you don't *have* to read The River first, but it would provide more context.

    1. BFR, I like to bake more when it’s cooler and then leave the oven door open to vent heat through the kitchen when I’m done. My home in PA didn’t have A/C either so I get ya!

Thanks for the advice on the book, I just reserved The River at the library.

  8. My wine days are behind me, unfortunately, as wine is my preference over beer which still agrees with my gut, LOL! I have been working on a 100% whole wheat hearth bread and we actually ate the one from last night. Each time I make a small change it is better than the loaf before. High elevation baking is so different than living at sea level...PS that chicken dish looks wonderful.

    1. Melynda, depending on my next doctor appointment my wine days may be limited soon. I hope not as I love a good Beaujolais. Whole wheat bread sounds very good and hearty.. I’ve never cooked or baked at high altitudes but my friend in Utah says it takes adjustments.

  9. I need to get back to making bread but it has to be gluten free which is such a chore to find a decent one.
Our favourite California at the moment at John and Bread and Butter. I just checked and we can get the Joel Gott so may try that for our next steak dinner.

    1. Jackie, I’ve looked at gluten free bread recipes and they do look like more work. We went gluten free for a period of time but not because of celiac . Doug’s heartburn is wheat induced & he didn’t need Prilosec when we were gluten free.
I’ll check out the Bread and Butter wine.

  11. For some reason, with this new computer (I switched to a Mac) I'm having trouble commenting on some blogs. Don't know what's up with that. It was supposed to be more user friendly? Anyway, we'll see if this gets through. I saved your wine recommendations, and the "sandwich" looks yummy!

    1. Claudia, getting used to a new computer can be frustrating. I got your other comment, I’ve had to go to approval on comments because of Spam.

  12. Oh I love baking bread! I've finally started getting back to it and I enjoy it so much. I'm jealous of your World Market. For some reason we don't have one here which makes me sad. I'm making up for it with Trader Joe's goodies but I'd still like some more variety!

    1. Katherine, world market is a neat store to browse through. They have food, wine, furniture, rugs, tableware and so much to look over. Trader Joe’s is great though and try those cookies called JoJos. Mmmmm....

    1. Marg, if we’d not been near a World Market I wouldn’t have bought so much this early. It’s a cool store but not close to home.

  16. I love a good cookbook recommendation, thank you. I've put it on my Christmas list. Cookbooks are kinda my thing...I have stacks of them and love reading (and cooking out of them). It's much kinder to my emotional state than the news these days. I've seen those mince pies, I love the shortbread cookies from Walkers. Do you reheat them? Mince is my favorite. And I, as well, am a seasonal drinker. I'll try Joel Gott, I've seen it in the store.

  17. Season of mince pies is coming. I do look forward to eating them warm with cream or ice-cream.
